Many aviators’ careers in Canada started with the Air Cadets. It is the positive experiences gained that caused many ex air cadets to stay involved, to help other young people experience the joy of flight and the opportunities aviation offers.

While COVID travel /gather restrictions reduced the activities of all youth groups including Air cadets, it did give pause to what needs to be done to rejuvenate the activities, as well as remembering just how much fun it is to be involved with the air cadets!

NATA members across Canada recognize the need to attract and train a new aviation workforce. At NATA 45, the northern and remote aviation conference which took place May , 2022, the NATA Board agreed to establish a more formal outreach with targeted youth groups starting with the Air Cadet League of Canada.

On October 29, the Pan- Territorial Air Cadet Committee Annual General Meeting takes place and NATA has accepted the kind invitation to participate and provide an update on aviation in Canada, as well as outline how NATA’s youth outreach would work.

The plan is informal, and fairly simple. NATA and the PTACC, will establish a quarterly meeting to discuss and decide what deserving air cadet will get some form of aviation orientation with a participating NATA member. The opportunity will be designed as to the air cadet’s interest and could include:

  • Job Shadowing
  • Simulator Training
  • Familiarization Flights
  • Groundschool Monitoring

On November 5, Yellowknife Air Cadet Squadron 825 is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a Banquet and have invited NATA to participate. Myles Cane, NATA Vice President and Senior VP of Summit Air, as well as a former 825 Air cadet has agreed to be the NATA Representative.

Summit Air, as well as Air Tindi, have agreed to support the celebration with invitations for the Cadets to tour the respective facilities. It is anticipated NATA will be the facilitator of any event and will coordinate with the participating air operator, and air cadet squadron.

NATA will continue to develop this outreach plan methodically, in partnership with the members, the Air Cadet League of Canada, as well as allied Associations.  The goal is simple.

  • To provide a positive aviation experience to a new generation of Canadians.
  • To provide learning and employment opportunities.
